What is the WISE100?

The WISE100 (Women in Social Enterprise 100) is a new initiative from the NatWest SE100 Index which aims to recognise the invaluable contribution of 100 of the most inspiring and influential women in social enterprise, impact investment and social innovation.

People will be able to nominate their women of choice via the WISE100 site and a panel of industry leaders will then narrow down those put forward to produce a final WISE100 List. These 100 women will then be invited to a special celebration event on 12 October 2017, as well as being featured in Pioneers Post Quarterly and online at pioneerspost.com

Nominations will open on Friday 12 May 2017.

Why is the WISE100 important?

We believe that an initiative like the WISE100 is important because recognising the role of women in social enterprise, impact investment and social innovation will help to inspire other sectors to diversify their workforce, bringing benefits not just to women but to business.

In the UK, 40% of social enterprises are led by women, in comparison with just 6% of the companies on the FTSE100. The social sector outperforms other sectors when it comes to gender equality and as such is uniquely positioned to drive forwards a campaign for gender equality that speaks both to social enterprise and corporate bodies.

Achieving gender equality is important for workplaces not only because it is ‘fair’ and ‘the right thing to do,’ but because it is also linked to an organisations overall performance. Businesses can only benefit by successfully attracting both men and women to their workforce. It’s now an established fact that organisations with the most gender diversity outperform those with the least.

We will announce the WISE100 across a variety of media channels including, but not limited to; the se100.net website, Pioneers Post website and across social media.

On what criteria will entries be judged?

Entries will be judged on the merit of the nomination – just how inspiring and/or impactful is the woman in question? We are certain that we do not want the WISE100 to become a popularity contest and so while number of votes per candidate will be taken into consideration we will not be composing the list entirely based on which women received the most votes.

Will the 100 women be notified before the list is made public?

Yes, we will make attempts to contact all women on the WISE100 list so as to invite them to the special celebration event on 12 October 2017, where the list will be made public for the first time.

What are the benefits of appearing on the WISE100 List?

There are multiple benefits to appearing on the WISE100 list:

• Increased visibility among peers, both for the individual nominated and for the organisation they work for

• Helping to promote the role of women not only within the social enterprise sector, but across all sectors more generally

• Helping to drive workforce / leadership diversity across all sectors, bringing benefits not just to women but to business

Does it cost to enter?

No, it is entirely free to nominate someone, and you can nominate as many women as you like.

How are the 100 WISE chosen?

A panel of industry leaders will help to narrow down the nominated women to the final WISE100.

Who is on the panel?

The make-up of the panel has yet to be confirmed, but we will announce the panelists via the se100.net website as soon as we have more information.

What’s the prize for the winners?

There are no winners as such, we will simply recognise the contribution of 100 women by featuring them on the WISE100 list.

Will the WISE100 be ranked from 1 to 100?

No, the WISE100 will not be ranked, it will simply list 100 inspiring women.

Why is this list specifically focusing on ‘women’ and not people in social enterprise?

Although the social sector outperforms other sectors when it comes to gender equality (in the UK, 40% of social enterprises are led by women, in comparison with just 6% of the companies on the FTSE100), there is still more that can be done.

If we want the upward trend of women in leadership positions to continue – both in the social sector and across other business sectors - we have to recognise and celebrate the good work that women are already doing in these roles. This is where the WISE100 comes in.

Furthermore, the SE100 Index already celebrates the successes of social enterprise organisations via its annual SE100 Awards, including the newly introduced Leadership Award which acknowledges an individual who led an organisation effectively, inspired their staff, and has demonstrated that their attitude and ability towards running a business has delivered success both on social and financial grounds, regardless of their gender.

How will entry information be used?

The information supplied in connection with your nomination will be used for the purpose of establishing the WISE100 List, and may be reproduced in connection with the WISE100 on various media channels – if  consent to do so is given.

We guarantee that any contact information you provide will be held confidentially and will only be used to contact yourself regarding the nomination if necessary.

Will this be an annual list?

Yes, we intend for the WISE100 to be an annual initiative, published towards the end of each year.

Who’s organising the WISE100?

The WISE100 is a new initiative from the SE100 Index - the UK’s leading source of market intelligence on social enterprise.
